I just got off the phone with daughter #2 smiling from ear to ear with pride. Why? Because she just successfully sold her third design for the kitchen company she works for. It may not seem like much, but not too long ago, when she was in high school, I wondered where her talents would take her.
Choosing a college was complicated for her. At first she thought she wanted to attend a traditional liberal arts college. She wanted to make sure it offered courses in the arts, but believed that the social scene would be to her liking and familiarity. I urged her to visit an art school in Manhattan; I wanted her to at least see what it was like. We went together, toured the studios, she presented her portfolio to admissions and left with a sense of excitement and wonder.
This visit changed the trajectory of her life. She ended up making the decision to attend a professional art school rather than a typical liberal arts college. The decision was difficult in that she knew she would be giving up a certain kind of college experience, but believed it would be worth it in the long run.
It wasn’t always easy, and the transition was rocky at times. But the fact that she was open (even if I did have to push her a little to be willing to go and visit art schools) and willing to examine other possibilities clearly impacted her life. (This was before I had started Head 4 Success College & Career Counceling, or you can bet I would have had her take both the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and the Strong Interest Inventory!)
If anyone is looking for a new kitchen, I know a great designer! But more importantly is the message to be open; you never know where your next step may take you.
