Do you follow the rules?

Do you follow the rules? I always thought I was a moderate rule follower. I was a good kid, never really got into any trouble, and did well in school, progressed through my undergraduate and graduate studies. Got jobs, got married, had children, opened a few businesses, paid my bills, paid my taxes, recycled as much as possible, tried to be “green” – but I think I might be fooling myself just a bit.

You see, while I believe I follow the rules, I also take no exception to getting the rules changed when I feel I need to. I don’t always agree with many rules, and I have come to realize that when this type of situation arises, I begin to create a process, a strategy, and a formulation for changing the rules so I can reach my desired outcome.

The fact is, that NO, never really means NO to me!

Is this a good thing or a bad thing? I have to believe that for me it has been a good thing. I have used this tenacity to start businesses, make connections, take charge of my life and make things happen. I actually remember when it first began.

I lived very close to the elementary school I attended. So close that I was considered a “walker” and I walked to school. It was practically right across the street. In those days, girls were mandated to wear skirts to school. As a “walker” in the winter, I took exception to this rule. I was cold! I started a petition to allow girls to wear pants to school, especially in the winter. Low and behold, I got the rule changed!

While I do not condone breaking the law or breaking rules that could cause injury or damage to anyone or anything, I think deciding to question rules and attempting to change them is a good thing.

Anyone with an entrepreneurial spirit is going to have to grasp this notion, and find ways to make changes to achieve desired goals. This is also true of people looking for jobs, applying to college – basically anyone trying to reach their dream.

So my advice is to consider the rules that you face. Determine if any changes in the rules might open possibilities for you. Don’t be offensive, rude, or pompous; just question, evaluate, and develop strategies that may force you to bend or change the rules to reach your goal.
